Truth is...STRANGER & more SINISTER....than Fiction

Every day headlines prove that reality is infinitely stranger than fiction because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities and  Truth is not. Life can be full of both pleasant and unpleasant surprises.
The longer you live the more surprises you´ll get as regards to people, ideas  and objects. Literature is full of incredible stories of survival, faith, hope, success, forgiveness, kindness and shocking cruelty all over the world.
Let´s look at some of  these news stories:

FIREFIGHTERS MISTAKENLY PUMP JET FUEL ON FIRE INSTEAD OF WATER

MISSING WOMAN UNWITTINGLY JOINS SEARCH PARTY LOOKING FOR HERSELF

SCREENING OF NOAH CANCELLED AFTER THEATRE FLOODS

MY FAVOURITE AUTHORS ARE JOAN MIRÓ AND GABRIEL MIRÓ or

JUAN GRIS AND A. JEAN GROSS

MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE: A BANDAGE/A pair of scissors WAS LEFT INSIDE A GIRL´S WOMB AFTER DELIVERY. (Check ten horrible cases of medical malpractice)

There is enough misery in the world, isn´t there? Reality is more sickening, much more shocking .There is plenty of literature on  misery memoirs. Just to recall a few:

DAVE PELZER´S A CHILD CALLED IT HAS SOMEONE BEING FORCED NAKED ONTO A HOT STOVE

CONSTANCE BRISCOE´S UGLY  HAS THE MAIN CHARACTER BLEACH-SWALLOWING

ARTHUR´S KOESTLER´S DARKNESS AT NOON REFLECTS THE DYNAMICS OF TORTURE AND PRISONER ABUSE.

Just to finish off on a bitter note I´m going to reflect in words the cruelty and brutality of war, the shocking effects of war, any war which opens up a catalogue of human depravation. The end justifies the means and All is fair in love and war so there we are..any type of behaviour can be acceptable to get what you want and demoralise the enemy.....
Horrifying scenes of violence can be seen in many modern films from Stanley Kubrick to Quentin Tarantino, M. Haneke, Gaspar Noe... The following have not been gleaned from a CIA torture manual or from the Inquisition but from a history book depicting the emotional devastation of the Spanish peninsular war fought between 1808-1814, The peninsular war by Charles Esdaile The repetition of  mistakes is the essential characteristic of any war. They are too dreadful to relate in more detail, which would render this as pornographic.

CIVILIAN BOMBING

Intentionally wounding instead of killing

Backstabbing
Men stoned to death
  "     starved to death
  "     burned to death
 "      boiled in oil
  "     sawn in half
"    buried up to their necks in the ground and left to die of thirst
"    had their testicles cut off  and put into their mouths
"   used the coffins as wood to warm themselves up, throwing away the skeletons
"   saw their wives and daughters raped by the enemy
  "   were fed rotten food.
"   were hacked to pieces alive starting with fingers and toes
Emaciated dogs were eating the corpses of the entire population which had been massacred
Girls had their earrings plucked.
At Fontaneira a woman caught in the streets had her breasts cut off and a heavily pregnant woman was torn open to have her unborn child killed and she herself died bleeding in agony.
Prisoners were forced to dig the hole in which they were to be buried themselves.

These chapters of the utmost horror and horrid excesses of humankind  are
unspeakable acts committed by ordinary people...
How are we ever going to redeem ourselves?
Where are our survival skills and resilience?
Are these our universal wounds or our original sins?
Is it better forgetfulness or the clear remembrance of horrors?
Remember animals are never half as cruel as human beings.
As human beings do we accept defeat and assume other people´s pains?

I simply wanted to awaken  your sleepy conscience.

Portfolios,Scrapbooks and other school diaries

Fashions in the academic world come and go. In recent years it has become fashionable to ask our students  to keep an English language Portfolio just to look more european more standard-like.
A portfolio used to be first and foremost a briefcase;
then it was used in finance as a collection of assets,(which connects very well with the leading politicians in our advanced capitalist consummer world),
in the art world as a collection of samples of an artist´s work,
 a portfolio of properties in the real-estate world;
a career portfolio which is an organised presentation of an individual´s education and skills or even an electronic portfolio, just a collection of electronic documents in the educational world.
In the political sphere there used to be the figure of a Minister  without a Portfolio to refer to a Minister who does not head a particular ministry or with no specific responsibilities.
After thirty-odd years as a teacher and having kept the records of school diaries or classroom diaries for decades I may have become a teacher without a portfolio and here´s why:

I prefer the use of an observation journal, even a scrapbook, which records your  learning biography.

As an educator every day I am more and more in favour of boosting  ATTITUDES and PRINCIPLES rather than contents which may soon vanish in the students´minds.
The attitudes I hold dear are :

CURIOSITY

ENTHUSIASM

EMPATHY

CREATIVITY

RESPECT

TOLERANCE

INDEPENDENCE

AUTONOMY

COMMITMENT

APPRECIATION

RESPONSIBILITY

COMMUNICATION

BALANCE

OPEN-MINDEDNESS

COOPERATION & COLLABORATION

(COMMUNITY SERVICE SPIRIT) (Not Competitiveness or outright competition)

CARING & SHARING

SELF-DISCOVERY

STIMULATING CRITICAL THOUGHT

being aware of the negative effects of FEAR

FOSTERING A POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON LIFE

LIFELONG CROSSCURRICULAR LEARNING

The typical portfolio consists of a language passport, a language biography and a dossier.
The average scrapbook is a visual diary which captures your thoughts, your creativity and feelings and memories in a little book.
My school diaries are some sort of "silva rerum", a mixed chronicle of all the activities and projects carried out including:

 Our nine month journey

Weekly timetable

Ephemera

Fun activities

Stories

All about Me (each individual student)

Projects

Home reading record

My language practice

Different celebrations & Intercultural learning

Extracurricular activities

We have to record as self-assessment:

What can I do well?

What is still hard for me?

What can I still work on?

What will I do next?

What did I learn?

and our progress in the skills of:

Listening, Reading, Conversation, Speaking, Writing, Culture.

ADYNATON: IDIOMS of IMPOSSIBILITY

Adynaton or plural Adynata is a figure of speech in the form of a hyperbole taken to such extreme lengths as to create a complete impossibility. Every language has some sort of idiomatic expression of impossibility and my task has been to ask my students to make up original impossible  tasks and realities. It helps to try to see the  world the other way round or from a different perspective. Let´s see some fossilized adynata:

WHEN FROGS GROW HAIR ( Spanish)
   "        PIGS FLY  (ENGLISH)
   "       THE LOUSE SNEEZES(Ukraine)
   "       HELL FREEZES OVER
"      THE GARDEN IS FULL OF DUCKS HOLDING PASTRY IN THEIR  HANDS(Turkish)
"     THE WILLOW BEARS GRAPES (Serbian)
"    THE SUN RISES IN THE WEST(Chinese)
   "    SALT BLOSSOMS (Algeria)
"    DOGS BARK WITH THEIR TAILS(German)
"   THE OWL´S TAIL BLOSSOMS  (Latvia)
"   THERE ARE TWO WEDNESDAYS IN A WEEK(Denmark)
"   THE PIG CLIMBS THE PEAR TREE IN YELLOW SLIPPERS(Bulgarian)
"    THE CRAWFISH WHISTLES IN THE MOUNTAIN (Russian)
    "    CHICKENS HAVE TEETH (France)
ON THE AFTERNOON OF ST. NEVER´S DAY (Portugal)
WHEN THE CROW FLIES UPSIDE DOWN (India)
"       GYPSY CHILDREN ARE STREAMING FROM THE SKY (Hungary)
    "     ST. JOHN LOWERS A FINGER(Colombia)
    "     GEESE PISS (Italy)

    "   CATS GROW HORNS (Malay)
"    FISH CLIMB POPLAR TREES (Turkish)
" TWO THURSDAYS IN THE SAME WEEK(Swedish)
IN THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND AND NEVER(Seychelles)

REMEMBER IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING.
WHAT WERE ONCE UTOPIAS ARE REALITIES NOWADAYS....
 USE YOUR IMAGINATION
DRAWING FROM SONGS SUCH AS "AS" by STEVIE WONDER:
UNTIL THE RAINBOW BURNS THE STARS OUT IN THE SKY
             THE OCEAN COVERS EVERY MOUNTAIN
DOLPHINS FLY AND PARROTS LIVE AT SEA
WE DREAM OF LIFE AND LIFE BECOMES A DREAM

ONE CAN EXPECT AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN PHILOSOPHERS
SOONER THAN BETWEEN CLOCKS

WHAT MY STUDENTS WROTE:

WHEN MY JUMPER  SHOUTS( Johana Luján)
WHEN TRUE GIRLS  ENJOY FRIED CHICKEN (Teresa Segovia)
WHEN FISH WALK(Thalia Jiménez)

RHYMING REDUPLICATIONS

A reduplication is a process in which the root of a word or the whole word is repeated exactly or with a slight change. It conveys a function such as intensification, plurality, or just to create new words.
This is an inherent part of what makes English such a musical language and apt to have so much fun with words.
We establish different categories:
a) exact reduplications:bye-bye;pee-pee:no-no;...
b) ablaut reduplications:chit-chat; criss cross;zig zag,...
c) onomatopoetic terms: Ding dong; bow wow; tick tock,...
d) others: helter skelter;walkie-talkie;witching and bitching;..

In the following examples you´ll have to identify the meaning and possible contexts and functions of the rhyming reduplications by providing us with a suitable linguisic context:

Ex: the nitty-gritty details of the murder investigation; incessant chitter chatter at school ;she gave me the heebie-jeebies at  the Halloween party,etc...

How can we get RID of the MAD in MADRID...?

THIS UNIT IS NOT POLITICAL AT ALL. It´s just one good way of enjoying the sheer fun and creativity in the classroom. We started  by giving our students copies of the comedy song  Who put the bricks in Brixton... This song  asks about different places in England ,Scotland and Wales, for instance

Who put the pool in Blackpool?

Who put the bed in Bedford?

Who put the liver in Liverpool?

Who put the scar in Scarborough?

Who put the barn in Barnsley?

Who put the chef in Sheffield?

Who put the udder in Huddersfield?

Who put the car in Cardiff?

Who put the swan in Swansea?

Who put the glass in Glasgow?

Who put the ham in Hamilton?

Who put the mother in Motherwell?

We did this activity both in English and Spanish and this is what our students came up with:...

WHO PUT THE BAR in BARCELONA or BARBADOS?

                              BOMB in BOMBAY?

                               ALTAR in Gibraltar?
